About the 7117 GP2200i

An American-born company, Generac started out producing portable generators for Sears, Roebuck and Co. under the Craftsman brand from the 1960s to the 1980s when they entered the commercial market. Since then, the company has had a few disputes and short-lived and tumultuous relationships with Caterpillar and the Briggs & Stratton Corporation before finally reentering the portable generator market in 2008.

The 7117 GP2200i inverter generator uses TruePower Technology to provide clean, stable power which is safe for charging sensitive electronic devices, tools and small household appliances.

This model includes an integrated start dial that streamlines startup procedures by combining the choke, run and stop functions into one dial. The pull-start, gas-powered motor provides clean, stable power without over-complicated mechanisms.

The Generac 7117 GP2200i is a top rated portable inverter generator, making several top-10 lists for 2019, mainly because of its low fuel consumption and noise level. The 1700 watts of running power is enough to simultaneously run any one household appliance along with a few small electronic devices, such as a laptop and router.

The 1.2-gallon gas tank will sustain a moderate use (25% load) for up to 10.75 hours. The run time would obviously diminish with higher loads, but switch on the economy mode and this generator will give you even better fuel economy and extended hours of use, with a slightly lower energy output of course.

The sleek, 46-lb fully-enclosed unit is compact and ready for transportation. The built-in carrying handle on the top is super convenient and comfortable. However, there’s only one handle. So it might be a little awkward to carry between two people.

With paralleling capabilities, you can connect this generator to another similar inverter generator to up the power output and/or to be able to power more appliances and devices simultaneously. The one drawback is that it requires an additional purchase of a parallel kit, apart from the generators themselves. Other models have the feature built-in; nullifying the need for an extra purchase.

Pros and Cons

  • TruPower Technology provides lower noise levels and clean, stable energy output that is safe for sensitive electronics
  • Lightweight, compact design makes for easy transportation
  • 1.2-gallon gas tank provides up to 10.75 hours of run time on a moderate 25% load
  • Indicator lights on control panel tell you how much power you have left, when the oil and gas are getting low, as well as when the generator is getting overloaded
  • Includes parallel capabilities to connect with other units
  • Simplified start dial integrates the start, run and stop functions

  • Not as powerful as a traditional generator or when compared to some of its inverter generator peers
  • Separate parallel kit required to take advantage of the unit’s paralleling capability
  • Only one DC outlet means it would be necessary to use a power strip to connect more than one device

The Generac 7117 GP2200i 2200 Watt Portable Inverter Generator is a good middle-of-the-road option that combines lightweight portability with a medium amount of power. With a little strategic planning to avoid overloading the motor, this model can work well for both occasional voluntary off-grid activities (i.e. camping, tailgating, powering tools at a remote location) and as an emergency back-up generator.

If hooking up a second generator is necessary for more power or simultaneous use of several devices, it would require an extra purchase of a paralleling kit. All in all, this is a great choice for an inverter generator that won’t break the bank.
